All About Lombok Pottery
Whereas Bali is famous for its handicrafts such as carvings from stone and
wood, sarongs, kites, ceramics, baskets with intricate paintings, crafts and art
etc., one of our neighboring islands to the east is more famous for its pottery
than anything else apart from tourism and Mt. Rinjani, the second highest peak
in Indonesia.
Lombok has seen a major demand in pottery products over the past several
years and the material is very versatile and can be combined with rattan, bamboo
and various other grasses. In the meantime we have developed an entire new line
of home ware, tableware and candleholders all made from terracotta originating
in Lombok.
Tradition has it that each family has its own wheel, which is not powered by
foot to spin around, but rather to turn the product on the table and is moved by
giving it a swing by hand.Lombok Pots vary in size from very small 7 CMS to
medium sized pots up to 100 CMS. The burning process is still done as it was
hundreds of years ago in open- air kilns, low heat and fuels used are usually
coconut husks, bark and grasses. The finishing is done, by applying various
oils, and they are smoothed down making them all shiny. We employ up to 250 such
wheels spread over 2 villages and have the capacity to meet anybodies demand.
Lombok Pottery is traditionally handmade by women, whereas the men, if they are
not at work outside of their village or island, simply help out when it comes to
arrange for the packing, crating and loading of the items.
Currently you will find 3 types of finishing, namely the natural look, the
dark black look and the spotted look (asem) The latter requires an additional
step in the production process and is approximately 10 % more expensive than the
natural and black finishing.
Nature Collection Bali has tried to select a representative volume of Lombok
Pottery as far as the existing ranges go and where ever we have an active
interest for development we have opted for our own designs always bearing in
mind to work with sustainable resources, a lasting quality and with the purpose
to be able use the products, not merely as decoration. We have mastered and
introduced the concept of waterproofing the pottery products so that you can now
also enjoy a wet arrangement in the pots.
All our Lombok Pottery from Indonesia is handmade in traditional village
environments, and each piece is therefore a unique piece in its own right. The
products, which are handcrafted and finished, may vary slightly from one piece
to another, but this is also the charm of owning such a piece of Lombok
produce.
We ensure that minimum quality standards are adhered to, that production
times promised are not overrun without good reason, that all goods are packed
proper and according to standard and overall that customer satisfaction is
achieved. In the process we keep you as our buyer always informed and abreast of
new developments.
Lombok Pottery and Home ware products are also available for the high volume
market and can be produced with a maximum of 5,000 - 10,000 pieces per month
depending on model and style. Special designs can be accepted too. We have
currently catalogued well over 300 items, so if you cannot find that what you
are looking for immediately, please feel free and ask for our extended html
catalogue on Lombok products.
For high volume production, together with our largest customer, we have
developed a new concept of packing based on economics and at the same time a
very ecological way of packing by eliminating traditional waste. Goods are
stored on trays, which in turn are loaded onto pallets, shrink-wrapped and
strapped.
Minimum orders for Lombok Pottery from Indonesia vary per item, but we would
like to take in at least 25 - 50 pieces per line item / style always bearing in
mind that we ship a minimum of 1 x 20'container. We look forward to you
entrusting us with your next order.
